What are the current APS salary scales?
The current Australian Public Service (APS) salary scales are set under the Australian Public Service Commission Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027 and span $57,497–$292,961 across the APS 1–6, Executive Level (EL1–EL2) and Senior Executive Service (SES) classifications. See the salary table above for the current range at each individual classification. All APS classifications receive 15.4% employer superannuation on top of base salary.
How does APS pay compare to state public service salaries?
APS salaries are broadly competitive with state equivalents at entry and mid levels, though some state jurisdictions like Queensland and Western Australia can pay more at senior levels. The key APS advantage is its 15.4% employer superannuation rate — above the standard 12% Superannuation Guarantee — which adds meaningfully to your total remuneration package.
When is the next APS salary increase?
APS pay rises are delivered on the schedule set out in the current APSC enterprise agreement, which provides a series of annual increases across all classifications (APS 1 through SES Band 2) over the life of the agreement. The exact timing and size of each increase are fixed by that agreement — check the salary table above and the linked source agreement for the rates that currently apply.
How does a HECS/HELP debt affect APS take-home pay?
APS employees with a HECS/HELP debt have a compulsory repayment withheld through PAYG once their income exceeds the repayment threshold ($67,000). The repayment is a share of income that rises as you earn more, so it grows as you move up the APS classifications. Enable the HECS toggle in the Tax Calculator on this site to see the exact effect on your take-home pay.
Can APS employees salary sacrifice?
Yes. APS employees can salary sacrifice into superannuation, where concessional contributions are taxed at the concessional super rate rather than your full marginal income-tax rate — the higher your marginal rate, the larger the saving. Some agencies also offer novated vehicle leases. Check your agency's enterprise agreement and HR policies for the specific options available to you.
What leave entitlements do APS employees receive?
Under the NAA Enterprise Agreement, APS employees receive 20 days annual leave, 18 days personal/carer's leave per year, 3 days Christmas stand-down leave, and long service leave at approximately 3 months per 10 years of continuous service. These entitlements represent significant additional value beyond base salary.
How does APS pay compare to private sector IT and policy roles?
At APS 3–5 levels, private sector IT roles in Sydney and Melbourne typically pay more in base salary, but APS offers 15.4% employer super (above the statutory 12%), job security, and structured career progression. The gap narrows considerably at APS 6–EL1 once total remuneration is compared, while senior private sector roles tend to outpace APS EL2 base rates.
